Candidate Statement

I love this country and I love farming! This is my life! I love our freedoms to produce wheat that is used to feed the world. As a combat veteran I know service before self. I have no problem with getting grease under my finger nails and use a grease gun. Most importantly, I know the hard work that is required to keep a 5th generation wheat and fallow farm sustainable. I want use my experiences and elevate the Washington wheat profile on the national and international horizon.

Why do you want to serve on the board of the Washington Grain Commission?

To continue serving the wheat industry. Add knowledge and insight of wheat cropping systems, varieties, research, and education. Be an advocate of low rainfall quality wheat varieties for dry land farming and high yielding quality varieties for irrigation farming. Because this district is a low rain fall zone, my hands on dry land farming knowledge is paramount for sustainable wheat production.

What experience and strengths would you bring to the Washington Grain Commission?

I currently serve on the WGC research, education, variety release and Wheat Foundation committees. I listen! I bring a practical farming insight and experience. Our district is a low rainfall wheat farming area that requires unique farming fallow rotations that combat resistant weeds. A different approach to sustainability and economics is required for our district.

What challenges being faced by the small grains industry would you focus your attention on?

We must not let our LSR dams be breached or drawn down. We must advocate for increased navigation, power generation and irrigation. Accept and research HB4 drought resistant wheat and intelligently adapt the technology to Washington wheat varieties. Assist WSU in developing wheat varieties that are used on irrigated and dry land farms capturing the competitive market.

What else would you like the growers and landlords of your district to know about you as a candidate?

We are at a critical stage in our industry. I believe it is my responsibility as a member of the commission to expand and diversify our wheat market penetration in Mexico and South America to go along with our Asian partners. As an advocate for our industry, we need to continue to educate consumers and policy makers on the effects of increased regulations, economic needs for affordable innovation, and trained and skilled workforce.
